College: What will you need to complete your application

Common App allows you to send electronics applications directly to the schools you have selected. But if you cannot find some schools in their list, you can ask the admission offices for their application forms.

Make sure:

  • Fill them out carefully. (Read throughout)

  • Follow the application instructions in the school's catalog.

  • Always make copies of everything you submit. Always...

  • Pay the application fee. That can be waived if you speak to the admission office.

  • Patience. Wait until a response to your application.

Here is what you will need to complete your application.

HIGH SCHOOL TRANSCRIPT:

Colleges like seeing your grades. Request your high school transcript to provide you with a copy of your transcript; or they can send it directly to the colleges you are interested in.

APPLICATION FEE:

Some schools require application fees to be paid before submitting your application($20 - $75). If you cannot afford it: talk/email the admission office and explain your situation, they can have it waived for your case.

COLLEGE ADMISSIONS TESTS:

TOEFL scores : Most universities requires a score 80 or higher. However, if you have anything less than 80 or never took the TOEFL. You are able to still apply for the school, but you will have to take ESL(English as the Second Language) classes for a minimum of a semester. If after a semester of ESL, you want to start your major classes, you will have to take the TOEFL and have a score equal or higher than their requirements. Go to ETS for test dates, times and locations.

SAT or ACT scores may also be required for international students.

To apply for the test. Go to Collegeboard and find out the test dates, times and locations.

LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION:

Colleges/Universities require letters of recommendation. Find a teacher, mentors, employers, your neighbor, to write a letter about your accomplishment. They can also write about your potential and why they believe in you.  Recommendation cannot come from relatives.

APPLICATION ESSAY:

Even if you apply to school via common app or any other way, you will need to write an essay. Some schools choose the topic for you, others let you choose.

I wrote about my multiple travels and what I learned from them. But you can choose anything of your liking that will let the school know the real you.
